Thierry’s Insider Tips for Bern
For many, Bern is simply the Swiss capital – but for our Chairman of the Board, Thierry Kneissler, it’s home. As a true Bern local, he knows every alley, every cosy pub, and every peaceful spot along the Aare. He’s put together his favourite places just for you – personally tested, lovingly selected, and perfect for a day trip or a relaxed weekend with HotelCard.

Best Spots to Dive into the Aare
In summer, taking a dip in the Aare is an absolute must – the perfect way to cool down and let the river carry you along. If you prefer a quieter experience, skip the busy Marzili pool and head to the spots locals love: experienced swimmers hop in at Wasserwerkgasse 2 (right across from the Bear Park). For beginners, the Lorraine pool is ideal – with a gentler entry and a laid-back vibe.

Thierry’s Favourite Route: Aare – Old Town Walk
Bern is best explored on foot – and this route showcases everything that makes the city so special. Start at the train station, then head to the Federal Palace, and take the Marzili funicular down to the Aare. A stroll along the Dalmaziquai is a must, and the Schwellenmätteli is the perfect riverside spot to stop for a drink or bite to eat.
Next, continue through the English Garden to the Bear Park, cross the Nydegg Bridge into the lower Old Town, and make a quick detour to see the Zytglogge and Käfigturm, before heading back to the station. It’s the perfect afternoon activity after a visit to the BEA.

Saturday Ritual: The Weekly Market
Every Saturday morning, Bundesplatz and Bärenplatz turn into a paradise for anyone who loves fresh produce, flowers, cheese, or homemade specialties. The smaller market on Münstergasse is especially popular with meat lovers. It’s worth getting up early – those who arrive before 8 a.m. can enjoy the calm before the alleys fill with life around 10 a.m..

Thierry’s Favourite Neighbourhood: The Matte District
With its shady past and even its own dialect – Matten-Berndeutsch – the Matte District, Bern’s oldest quarter, has no shortage of wild stories to tell. From the Münster Cathedral, you can stroll across the Münsterplattform, a lovely spot to enjoy a coffee on a sunny day.

The Matte Lift takes you straight down into the heart of the quarter, once known as the “black district” – a nickname dating back to Napoleonic times. Here, you’ll experience Bern at its most authentic: narrow alleyways, a quaint little neighbourhood shop, and true hidden gems like Restaurant Fischerstübli, a must for tartare fans.

Never a Dull Moment: The Museum of Communication
If you’re looking for inspiration, the Museum of Communication is just the place. It’s interactive, creative, and full of surprising insights into the world of media and language. Perfect for families, but also a great solo outing. The exhibitions – both permanent and temporary – are among the best in Switzerland.

The Best Sunset with a View of the Old Town
To end the day: take in the view over Bern’s rooftops. Sunset is especially magical from the Rosengarten or the Aargauerstalden. The Muristalden also offers a stunning view of the city – perfect for memorable photos or simply to take it all in.

And after the sun goes down, why not wrap up the day in one of Bern’s bars? If you’re into unique shops and trendy places to grab a drink, head to the lower Old Town. You’ll find real Bernese character here, charming boutiques, and iconic bars like Au Trappiste or the On Tap Craftgallery, both located on the vibrant Rathausgasse.
