Toggenburg - Paradise for hikers

A giant dragon, a monster, is said to be responsible for the formation of the seven Churfirsten. At least according to the Toggenburg legend. It takes a little imagination to recognise the shape of a dragon in the Churfirsten, which stretches out between Lake Walen and the Säntis massif. Less imagination is needed to recognise the potential for enchanting hikes in this unique landscape. Let us whisk you away to a world full of folklore and pristine nature. And, as always, with the best hotel offers.

Out in the nature

The Churfirsten are the landmark of the hiking world in Toggenburg with seven peaks to discover. The Chäserrugg at 2,262 m.a.s.l. is the most popular and easiest to reach. You can travel comfortably by train from Unterwasser, or take one of the numerous hiking trails. When you reach the summit, enjoy the refined culinary delights of the Chäserrugg peak restaurant along with the breathtaking panoramic view. The peak restaurant was designed by the famous architects Herzog & de Meuron inspired by the Appenzell style. A visit is definitely worthwhile.

For all summit strikers: complete the Kaiserroute, during which you conquer all 7 summits in one day! Another giant that characterises the Toggenburg is the Säntis. No less than 6 countries are in sight from the top of the mountain when you let your gaze wander over the horizon.

Unterwasser: Berg & Bett Säntis Lodge

The former Hotel Restaurant Säntis shines in new splendour with modern, stylish furnishings and a new name: Berg & Bett Säntis Lodge. Enjoy either the magnificent view of the Säntis or the Churfirsten in the spacious double rooms and taste Toggenburg specialities at the breakfast buffet. The lodge is located in the centre of Unterwasser and is an ideal starting point to explore the region. One of the highlights of the new Säntis Lodge is definitely the in-house cinema: instead of watching the news on the TV, you can spend a cosy evening here with popcorn and an exciting movie. Simple yet original!

Relaxing by the water

Within a 10-minute walk from Unterwasser, a beautiful natural spectacle splashes awaiting to be discovered: the Thur waterfalls, which plunge 23 metres into the deep. Small bridges allow you to admire the waterfalls from all sides. Easily accessible, the excursion is suitable for people of all ages.

Several beautiful mountain lakes await you in Toggenburg: hop into the Voralpsee or Gräppelensee for a refreshing dip after a challenging hike. Another option would be a short morning hike to the Schönenbodensee or the Schwendiseen lakes. Both lakes can be reached by foot within an hour. The breakfast in your accommodation will certainly taste even better afterwards. No matter which lake you choose, the wonderful mountain scenery will be there for you to marvel at.

Wildhaus: Berggasthaus Oberdorf

The 3* Hotel Berggasthaus Oberdorf is located 1230 metres above sea level. The hotel is perfect for families, as it is located right in the hiking and excursion area of the Churfirsten and provides rooms for the whole family. The mountain guesthouse can be reached by chairlift or by foot; you will need a permit if you are travelling by car.

The area turns into a small but beautiful winter sports resort in the winter.

KlangWelt Toggenburg

Toggenburg loves its customs and traditions. This is particularly apparent in the traditional singing and music culture, for which a world of its own has been created: Forge your own bell in the sound smithy, or yodel in a sound course to experience this unique tradition. Another perfect option for a family outing would be a stop at the unique Klang Escape Room.

Listen in for yourself: this is how Toggenburg sounds.

Whether you are standing on the top of a mountain peak, enjoying the tranquillity of an alpine lake or listening to the sounds of the bells: Toggenburg is "ase schö" for all nature lovers.
